Boulder Walls & Stone Work

From a short retaining wall holding back a garden slope to a full terraced hillside, we set natural fieldstone and granite boulders to hold grade, stop erosion, and last through Wisconsin weather — stacked tight, drained right, and built to stay put for decades instead of seasons.

WHAT BOULDER WORK COVERS

Stone That Holds & Lasts

Most boulder wall calls fall into three buckets. Here's the work we take on and what you can expect on your lot before the first stone gets set.

Retaining Walls & Slope Stabilization

Heavy natural fieldstone and granite boulder walls stacked to hold back steep slopes, stop erosion, and turn unusable grade into level, usable ground — built to carry the load behind it, not just look like it does.

02

Stone Steps & Grade Transitions

Durable stone steps and transitions that connect elevations cleanly — from a hillside down to a patio, or a driveway up to a walkout — set to stay put through freeze and thaw instead of heaving apart after the first hard winter.

Landscape Stone Features

Terraced hillside features, shoreline armoring, and natural stone accents that bring structure and character to an outdoor space without looking engineered — stone that fits the property instead of fighting it.

WHY IT MATTERS

Built to Hold, Built to Last

A boulder wall isn't decoration — it's structure. The part you see is the stone; the part that matters is everything behind it: the base it sits on, the grade it holds, the drainage that keeps water from building up against it, and the way each stone locks into the next so the whole wall works as one piece instead of a pile of rocks waiting to slide. Get that wrong and a retaining wall bulges, leans, or lets go after a season or two — and the slope it was holding back comes with it. Get it right and it's still standing straight decades later, through every freeze-thaw cycle and every spring melt Wisconsin throws at it.

We've been setting stone across Burnett and Polk County since 1999, and the approach is the same on every wall: read the slope first, understand what the wall actually has to hold back, and size the stone and the base to the load — not to what looks good in a catalog. A two-foot garden wall and a full hillside terrace are different animals, and the difference shows up in the base prep, the batter, and the drainage long before it shows up in the stone. We plan where the water goes before we set the first boulder, because a wall that holds water behind it is a wall that's going to fail — slowly at first, then all at once.

The goal is a wall that looks like it belongs on the property and performs like it was engineered — stone set tight, joints matched, grade dressed back in, and the site left clean. When the work's done right, the wall reads as natural instead of forced, the slope above and below it is stable and usable, and you're not back on the phone in three years asking why it's leaning. That's the standard we stack to: stone that holds today and keeps holding long after we've packed up and moved on to the next one.

HOW WE APPROACH IT

Assess, Set, Finish

No two slopes stack the same. We keep it straightforward — read the grade, set the stone tight, and finish clean before we hand it off.

01

Walk & Assess

We walk the slope, read the grade, and figure out what the wall actually needs to hold back before we spec the stone — so it's built to carry the load, not just look like it is.

02

Set & Stack

Boulders are set on a prepared base, graded, and stacked tight — each stone seated against the next so the wall locks up and drains the way it should instead of holding water behind it.

Finish & Hand Off

Joints tightened, grade dressed back in, and the site left clean and ready — a wall that looks like it's always been there and holds like it was built to.
